This talk is based on a recent trip to Japan where I had the opportunity to visit many contemporary textile artists. I was impressed by the connection between their very beautiful work and the long history of the craft in Japan.

I also present the work of the Japanese Shibori community who visited San Francisco in 2001 and shared their modern interpretations of this particularly fascinating approach to surface design. I bring examples of work by these artists. Their influence on my own art work is also a part of this talk.
